There is something called hypothalamus in our brains which keeps our body temperature in control and therefore is also known as body’s thermostat. Generally, the normal temperature of a body is considered to be 98.6 F (37 C) but because throughout the day our body temperatures vary, anywhere between 97 F (36.1 C) to 99 F (37.2 C) can be considered as normal body temperature. Sometimes, hypothalamus may change our normal body temperature towards the higher side which we know as fever. This may be due to various reasons such as a viral or bacterial infection, heat stroke or even extreme sunburn, some other abnormal condition within the body, and immunizations etc. Generally, fevers are not a cause of worry and they go away on their own within a couple of days. Fever is, in fact, our body’s mechanism to help fight off various infections. It is only when the body temperature becomes 103 (39.4 C) or higher and the fever doesn’t go away for more than three days that you should take measures to bring down your body temperature. This can initially be done with the help of home remedies for fever. If, however, home remedies don’t work and fever isn’t going away, you should consult your physician.
